Build Your Own Hydroponic Garden
http://www.self-sufficient-life.com/Hydroponic_Gardening
DIY Hydroponics garden. Hydroponics is not a new development. It has been around since nearly the beginning of recorded history. That wonder of the ancient world known as the Hanging Gardens of Babylon was an exercise in hydroponics and rice has been grown hydroponically for centuries.
Today, hydroponics is used in a variety of settings. Wherever soil is unavailable, hydroponic gardening seems to appear. Wildcatters on offshore oilrigs grow their own tomatoes. Cooks on nuclear submarines hydroponically grow vegetables to use in there crew’s meals. Right now, plants are growing on orbiting space stations without a single grain of soil.
This video is an outline of the equipment and steps neccessary to build your own hydroponic garden. More information and diy hydroponics instructions can be found at http://www.self-sufficient-life.com/Hydroponic_Gardening

what substrates have people had the best luck with? i want a system that is modular - plug and play … like pvc pipe with substrates and bubbles flowing in. do you need to regulate the N2 CO2 O2 levels?
im interested in growing herbs, and also low sunlight roots. ginseng seems like a huge world-wide challenge right now
Sorry, I don’t know what it is.
what song is this?
Excellent instructional
I’ve been looking into a hydro , air-stone set-up for growing lettuce and a few other vegetables.
Compost soup is another alternative (and natural) source of nutrients.
Another material to use instead of styrofoam? Wood possibly, some type especially resistant to rotting, etc?
A larger set-up:
Build a wooden frame with floor, lined with plastic liner. This type of set-up could be made to whatever size is ideal for each person and available space.
I’ve seen that as well icefox; actually, I have a few. You barely ever need to feed the fish because the plant feeds them. They could never eat enough to damage the plant though. I just have mine in small clear vases though. I think if you were intent on making the plants produce alot, the nutrients you would need would hurt the fish.
Sounds interesting.
Again, I cant honestly say I know what I’m doing, but I’ve seen people with beta fish living with the roots of plants, eating a small amount of the plant.
Fish need light, and they would probably eat any plants that you were trying to grow.
Wouldn’t it make more sense to have the tank as a fish tank? I personally don’t know much about gardening, but they might provide other essential nutrients just by being there.
Learn about hydroponics, and you will understand more. This design may not give much for plant support, but there are ways around that. You do need special nutrients because miracle gro isn’t good enough, but fish water is even better than hydro nutrients. As far as profitability goes, it is more profitable than you can imagine! This basic setup lends a lot to self sufficiency. Being able to grow your own food is one of the most important skills you can learn. Hydro can end world hunger.
This free video shows a simple set up that costs around $50. In this example potted herbs are used. Personally I think this ‘technology’ (which has been around for thousands of years) is amazing - but perhaps I am just easily pleased
An audiobook is available on my website which goes into a lot more detail.
So this whole setup is to support three plants that have to be tiny or they fall over? Like maybe for a single head of lettuce in each whole, tops? Plus you need grow lights, constant pumping and special nutrients? This does not seem like a technology that lends itself to profit, or even self sufficiency. ?
you did a great job. now i can build my own.
thanx
thank you for that that will save me alot of money in the near future
“The real problem is; why would you waist the money on a fish tank? that system would be cheaper and better in a plastic container, you don’t have to cover it with christmas paper and you can drill a hole and drain the thing to change your rez (weekly).”
As a fishkeeper that smokes I can vouch for this comment. Nobody has ever done anything innovative or cost-effective with a fish tank planter.
Thankx for the help…I needed sumthing to help me finish my Hydroponic Garden!
this is like the things the aztecs used to use i think they called them chinimpas or something like that! damn.
you get massive buds with those things… if you do it right of course.
the roots will congrigate over top of the bubbles and give themselves a nice bubble bath. They know where the O2 is!
word.
That is what the air stone is for. The real problem is; why would you waist the money on a fish tank? that system would be cheaper and better in a plastic container, you don’t have to cover it with christmas paper and you can drill a hole and drain the thing to change your rez (weekly).
won’t the plants need oxygen to the roots to breathe?
Sorry, I don’t know what the background music is called.
whats this song?
5 gallon bucket make sure it is black, so no light will get through and form algae.Much easier.
Thanks for the shout out about the hydroponic blogs. I also do food and garden things at http://red-icculus.com .
